Linux

  • Distros
    • While I sometimes experiment with OpenSuse, CentOS, Fedora, Debian, and others my Linux distribution choice since the beginning is Ubuntu. Ubuntu 8.04 was the first bare-metal install that I used 95% plus of the time for a straight two years. Ubuntu and Gnome 2 desktop was excellent.
  • Desktops
    • I use two DE (desktop environments) now. The first one is Kubuntu with KDE’s Plasma desktop The second one is Xubuntu with the Xfce desktop on my desktop PC. If I only had one choice to use on all my Linux machines today it would be Xfce. Here are some thoughts on the other desktop environments.
      • I have never been a fan of Gnome 3. Gnome 2 was great and the Mate desktop forked from Gnome 2 is also great.
      • Even though I’ve always liked KDE. Because of speed and bloat, I did not use it much in the past, but I been using it on my laptop for a half year now and it is excellent.
      • I’ve always liked OpenBox but never used it long term – not sure why.
      • I always liked Lubuntu with LXDE and now LXQT desktops
      • Enlightenment was always an attractive desktop, but I never use it long-term.
